This talk was presented to the Virtual Christian Forum for Reconciliation in Northeast Asia by Dr. Richard Hays (George Washington Ivey Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Duke Divinity School). The Virtual Forum took place from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm KST Friday, June 5, 2020, with more than 150 participants from Northeast Asia and beyond.

“The Forum started with worship and devotionals in the morning and ended with Taizé worship in the evening. The hope was that misunderstanding and divisions could be eliminated when Christians from different countries and cultures worshiped, praised, communicated with each other, and reflected on Jesus Christ’s spirit of “reconciliation” together. At this time of grave concern over the health threats, we would like to inform and invite you to pray together.
When there is a pandemic, people are naturally alarmed and swayed by panic, and even hatred. They will look for scapegoats and xenophobia spreads with the disease. Now the global health is at risk due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and the 2020 Christian Forum for Reconciliation in Northeast Asia is also watching the whole situation closely.
In China, thankfully, the spread is more under control and there are less confirmed patients each day. In South Korea, however, there is an uncontrollable outbreak, which is largely due to an extreme sectarian group called New Heaven and Earth. There are more than 300,000 followers in the group, and they have been notoriously deceptive in their outreach. They have ardent members called “harvesters” and they hide their identity and infiltrate into regular churches, and due to this secretive nature of their evangelistic tactic, they are not willing to share their list of affected patients. Now there are growing anger and hatred towards them among the public and Christians. With the pandemic, hatred grows as well.
In this kairos of widening division and growing hatred, we are preparing for the Reconciliation Forum. We still don’t know how furthermore the extent of the disease will affect us. We have no room for either optimism or pessimism at present, but we turn to God for his mercy and healing.
Let us pray for a speedy control of this virus outbreak. Pray for the Forum would be able to welcome participants from each country invited. Pray for the fearful people to realize their limits and come to a humble dependence on God. Here are some of the guidelines for the invited participants:
1. There is no plan to cancel or postpone the Forum as of now. However, we postpone the registration deadline to the end of March, so please register now and make your payment at the end of March. You can book your flights after that. In case the Forum is canceled or your trip is not allowed due to this outbreak after that, the registration fee will be refunded to you.
2. Please pray regularly for the virus outbreak to be under control and for the Forum to be hosted as planned. Pray that the travel bans or advisories to be lifted for us to travel freely.
It is a great joy and honor to walk with all of you in this journey of standing in the gap, and look forward to welcoming you to the Forum in June.

도테교회와의 만남
그런 손 목사가 28세 때 신학교(농촌전도신학교)에 들어가면서 많은 것이 바뀌었다. 정확히 말하면 신학교에서 만난 세키타 히로오 교수가 그를 이곳 도테교회로 데려오면서부터다. 세키타 교수는 도테교회를 세운 목사이기도 하다.
– 도테교회의 첫인상은 어땠나?
23년 전, 1991년에 이 동네에 처음 왔다. 스물여덟 살 때였다. 당시 이 동네에는 많은 코리안이 살고 있었고, 공장도 많았다. 당시 이웃끼리 “엄마” “아버지”라는 말이 길거리에서도 자유롭게 오갔다. 다른 일본 지역에서는 보기 어려운 친근한 모습이었다. 나도 재일동포가 많은 오사카에서 살았지만, 한국말을 밖에서 서슴없이 사용하는 경우는 없었다. 도테마을엔 필리핀이나 베트남 사람도 있었고, 북쪽과 남쪽의 사람이 서로 어울렸다. 서로 배척하거나 특별히 더 배려하는 것 없이 친하게 지냈다. 동네 밖 일본인들과는 때때로 다툼이 있었지만 우리끼리는 싸우지 않았다. 민족과 관계없이 인간이기 때문에 서로 잘 지냈다. 내가 그동안 일본인처럼 살려고 던져버렸던 것이 이곳엔 고스란히 남아 있었다는 점이 놀라웠다.
– 도테교회의 시작이 궁금하다.
이 지역에 대한 설명부터 해야 할 것 같다. 과거에 가와사키 지역은 아무것도 없는 곳이었다. 정치도시인 도쿄, 무역도시인 요코하마 사이에 있는 지역으로만 언급될 뿐이었다. 그러다가 전쟁하는 동안에 큰 군수업체 공장을 이곳에 많이 유치해 중공업 도시가 되었다. 한국전쟁 때도 이 지역에서 만든 포탄이 무기로 쓰였다. 그 전쟁 때 부유한 동네가 되었다. 중공업에 종사하고자 외국인들이 가와사키에 많이 들어왔고, 그때 코리안들도 많이 와서 살게 되었다. 그래서 그들은 한국전쟁에 대해서 복잡한 감정을 갖고 있다. 고국의 희생으로 이룬 부유함으로 인생을 즐기고 있다고 생각하기 때문이다.
그런데 그 안에서도 이 도테지역은 사람이 살아서는 안 되는 지역이었다. 가난한 사람들이 하나둘 강가에 정착하면서 하나의 슬럼가를 이룬 지역이다. 정상적인 과정으로는 시가지에 살 수 없었던 이들이 여기 도테에 마을을 이룬 것이다. (1959년 이세완 태풍 이후 3~4년 사이 100가구가 형성되었다. 행정을 피해 토요일과 일요일에 집을 지었다.) 이때 세키타 목사가 도테마을을 알게 되었고 교회를 세우게 된 것이다.
– 세키타 히로오 목사는 어떤 분이셨나? 왜 이곳에 교회를 세우신 건가?
그는 일본그리스도교단 소속 목사님이었다. 교단이 1967년에 일본인이 전쟁에 가담한 죄를 회개하는 ‘전쟁 책임 고백’을 했고, 여기에 감명을 받아 자기 인생을 전쟁 가해자의 입장에서 속죄하고 보상하는 데 바쳐야 한다고 생각했다. (제2차 대전 때 세키타 목사는 ‘군국소년’이었다.) 그는 교회를 지을 때 전쟁에 대한 책임을 가장 중요하게 생각했다. 지금 우리 교단은 우경화되어서 전쟁의 책임을 져야 한다는 쪽은 늘 약하지만, 세키타 목사님은 “잘못했다”라는 말로 끝날 수 있는 문제가 아니며 실천이 병행되어야 한다고 말했다. 전쟁 중 조선에서 일본으로 들어온 사람들과 일본인들이 다 같이 함께 살지 않으면 안 된다고 생각했고, 그러한 사상이 지금의 도테교회의 모태가 되었다.
사실 지금의 교회는 당시 도테마을의 김만수 할아버지에게 산 것이다. 도테마을 안으로 들어오기 전, 세키타 목사는 도테마을 밖에서 사역하고 있었다. 교회를 도테마을 안으로 옮기려고 하자, 교인들이 들고일어났다. 왜 불법지역의 불법건물을 사서 교회를 옮기느냐는 불만이었다. 세키타 목사는 단호했다. 교인들에게 이렇게 말했다고 한다.
“교회가 안전지대에 있어서는 안 됩니다. 변두리로 가야 합니다. 나 혼자 안전지대에 살면서 어떻게 변두리에 있는 사람을 만납니까? 내가 변두리로 가야 합니다.”
반대를 무릅쓰고 불법점거지역 도테마을 안으로 들어왔다. 기존 교인 50퍼센트가 이를 이해하지 못하고 교회를 떠났다. 1977년의 일이다. 세키타 목사는 교회활동은 물론 도테활동센터를 세워 도테마을 사람들의 수해를 지원하거나 취직 차별 문제를 해결하는 등 실질적인 도움을 주는 데 적극적으로 나섰다.
손유구 목사는 도테교회의 세 번째 목사다. 신학교를 졸업하고, 교회를 맡기까지는 적잖은 정체성의 혼란을 경험해야 했다. ‘일본인’으로 살아온 그에게 신학교에서 만난 재일동포들과 도테교회 사람들은 그를 ‘조선’과 다시 이어준, 변두리에서 만난 소중한 인연이다.
